Pilates in the US: Change and Opportunity
Ken will share
his experiences and perspective on the development of Pilates in the US, and
will offer his unique insight into current and future trends in the
all-important US marketplace.
Ken Endelman is the founder and owner of Balanced Body, the worlds
largest manufacturer of Pilates equipment. In 1976, Ken became the first to
substantially upgrade Joseph Pilates original designs with modern engineering
and materials. Over the last 25 years, Balanced Body has introduced numerous
equipment improvements, many of which are now industry standards. Ken was the
driving force behind the US court action that overturned the Pilates trademark
and made it available for general use. Since the trademark cancellation in
October 2000, the US Pilates market has grown and changed dramatically.
1.1 Interactive
Abdominal Scanning and introducing the Dimmer Switch Analogy of Abdominal
Control.
Warrick McNeill MCSP SRP
A lecture on, and demonstration of, real time biofeedback using
ultra-sound scanning of the abdominal wall to show the specificity of the
abdominal muscle contractions. Transversus abdominis is becoming an
increasingly familiar muscle thanks to the ground-breaking work of the
Queensland University Physiotherapy Research Team (Jull, Richardson, Hodges and
Hides) and the dissemination in the UK
via Kinetic Control (Comerford and Mottram). But, are you familiar with what a
specific transversus abdominal contraction actually feels like? Or looks like
on a scan? When does an oblique contraction come in? Warrick will also relate
normal breathing patterns into pre-Pilates exercise.
Warrick is
Director of Physioworks, a combined Physiotherapy and Pilates Clinic in central
London. He has many years of experience working with Pilates teachers, and
firmly believes that understanding the pre-Pilates skills of physiotherapists,
which relate to the modern concepts of treating musculo-skeletal pain, will
help to promote a greater understanding and cross-referral between
physiotherapists and Pilates teachers.
1.2 Breaking
Barriers
Movement comes from deep within; it is part of life
and part of us. It allows us to be ourselves, makes us unique, and helps us
express ourselves and feel alive. Sometimes we find a deep connection that
helps movement work. The hidden pathway, that until that moment, remained
undiscovered. A magic word, a touch, a thought could help open the energy
gates. Practical workshop.
Paul is now a
partner in the Brighton Pilates Studio.
1.3
Toning
Circles & Stretch Bands Workout
Cheryl Liss
This practical session will
demonstrate the many varied ways in which the Toning Circle (Flex Ring Toner)
and stretch band can be incorporated into your classes. Repeat of Cheryls
session from the last DW, repeated by demand.
Cheryl is based at Gordons studio, and teaches and
examines on BodyControl Pilates Reformer and other courses.
1.4 An
Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Qigong for Bodywork Trainers and
Therapists
Paul Lundberg
Traditional Chinese
Medicine has, for centuries, included remedial practices exercises engaging
the mental and physical faculties to regulate and support the subtle flow of
life-energy, or Qi, and considered the basis of all vital functions in the body.
This practical workshop will introduce guidelines for working with the breath, postural alignment
of the spine and movement awareness that this tradition imparts through
contemporary Qigong
Paul has a wide experience of the medical and healing tradition of
Qigong. He has studied, practised and taught many aspects of Oriental Medicine,
including acupuncture, shiatsu and Qigong, for over twenty-five years. He is a
co-founder of the Shiatsu College, UK and author of The Book of Shiatsu
(Gaia, 1992)
1.5 Go
Back to the Principles to move Forward
Mitsi Pippa
Mitsi,
always looking for a deep level of flow and ease within any movement, will
focus on the importance of thinking primarily of the self-condition, in order
to allow a particular movement to happen. Focusing on the process rather than
on the movement itself, you will explore how you can liberate your potential
and, so, execute different exercises from basic to most advanced, easily and
efficiently.
Mitsi has a long Pilates experience and works closely with the
various Body
Control Pilates activities when in London. She has recently moved to
the USA we are pleased to welcome her back for this Weekend!
1.6
Pilates Transitions and Sequences
Catherine Wilks
An active workshop geared to keeping the flow in your classes, focusing
on transitions between exercises across all levels.
Catherine is a senior teacher at the Body Control Pilates Studio in
South Kensington. She is also a member of the BCP teacher training team
2.1
Can Pilates really help balance
and proprioception disturbances caused by back pain?
Alan Zammit MSc, MCSP, MMACP, SRP
In this lecture, Alan will look at the issue of back pain and discuss
the initial findings from his clinical research trials in Malta regarding the
use of Pilates and the balance board.
Having previously been an international athlete, Alan qualified as a
chartered physiotherapist in 1986 and has since been at the forefront of
physiotherapy treatment and training in Malta and beyond, developing the first
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Complex on the island. Alan is also now
closely involved in the development of the Body Control Pilates Centre in Malta
and in developing research programmes assessing the benefits of Pilates.
2.2 Breaking
Barriers
Repeat of Session 1.2.
Christin
Kuhnert
A new Pilates programme with a specially created PilatesBall. The
playful exercises are fun and a useful addition to work at home and in the
studio, and aid prevention and rehabilitation. The ball is quickly inflated
without auxiliary equipment. This full body workout, focusing on co-ordination
and proprioception, offers a huge selection of exercises for every level from
beginner through to advanced and is based on the principles of the Pilates
Method. The exercises strengthen the Powerhouse muscles - pelvic floor,
tranversus abdominis, multifidus, obliques. Muscles are trained from a
pre-stretched position in order to create long and lean but powerful
muscles. Another main focus is on essential spine rotation.
Christin studied dance in Munich and New York. After taking up
Pilates in 1991, she received her Pilates Certificate in New York (Deborah
Lessen/Michele Larsson) in 1998. Christin now runs the Centre Circle Pilates
Studio in Munich and is actively involved in Dance Medicine Germany, presenting
Pilates at medical conferences.
Michael Miller
A
practical session covering The Full Mat. Come to move or come to observe
. Afterwards, we will discuss the idea
of Pilates uniform, eccentric loading flowing through progressive patterns of
movements. Please note that this is a challenging workshop.
Michael returns by popular
demand! Based in Colorado USA, he has taught Pilates for more than 18 years. He
has worked in the US with Romana Kryzanowska, Bruce King and Ron Fletcher and
has presented workshops around the world. We are delighted to welcome him back.
2.5
Creating Flow
how to link Pilates exercises to challenge
Co-ordination
and Stability
Suzanne Scott
In this
practical workshop, Suzanne will present blocks of Pilates-based movement
choreographed in such a way, as to challenge stability and make demands on the
bodys ability to remain stable as load, direction and speed are varied.
After leaving Cambridge
University, Suzanne studied dance and choreography at The Laban Centre in
London. She opened her own Pilates Studio in Somerset in 1996 after completing
her training with Alan Herdman. Suzanne now trains teachers for the Pilates
Foundation UK, lectures in Pilates to physiotherapists and recently presented
on Pilates at the International Conference on Movement and Dysfunction in
Edinburgh.

4.1 Understanding and Managing Back Pain
Dr. Dean Halfpenny MBBCh
FRCA
This lecture will refresh the knowledge base and
introduce some new concepts in back pain management. It will specifically
address the following areas:
the physiology of pain; why backs become
painful; typical pathological conditions of the back, the at risk back, when
and where to obtain help.
REPEAT OF AGM PRESENTATION
Dean is a consultant in Pain Management and
Anaesthesia with a special interest in Spinal Pain, consulting at St
Bartholomews Hospital, Harley Street Clinic and other independent hospitals.
He strongly believes that exercise is the key to a healthy spine and is a keen
supporter of the Body Control Pilates Method.
Note from Leigh: Dean and Alan Zammits presentations
at Novembers AGM were, from feedback received, regarded as two of the best
presentations weve had hence, we have asked Dean to repeat this!
4.2 Interactive
Abdominal Scanning and introducing the Dimmer Switch Analogy of Abdominal
Control.
Warrick McNeill MCSP SRP
Repeat
of Saturdays lecture (Session 1.1).
4.3 Looking
after yourself Qigong Practice and Energy Awareness for the Practitioner
Paul Lundberg
Health care practitioners and trainers - and Body Control
Pilates teachers - commonly experience tiredness and dissipation due to
overwork. Problems can arise due to over-commitment and identification with the
clients issues, loss of self-awareness and lack of clear insights and
techniques for self-protection. Qigong can offer us a number of simple and
practical ways to redress this imbalance. Harmonising effort and relaxation,
they not only support the practitioner, but also increase our effectiveness and
benefit the client as well.
4.4 Finding
Fluorescence
Michael Miller
The Full
Mat, come to move or come to observe
. Afterwards, we will discuss how you get
from Gravity to Fluorescence, and why it matters! Please note that this is
a challenging workshop.
Michael returns by popular
demand! Based in Colorado USA, he has taught Pilates for more than 18 years. He
has worked in the US with Romana Kryzanowska, Bruce King and Ron Fletcher and
has presented workshops around the world. We are delighted to welcome him back.
4.5 Creating Sacred Space
Zeb Glover MRSS
The aims of this workshop are to learn how to deepen the connection
between teacher and client; to develop quality of touch; to increase awareness
of your own and others personal space and boundaries; enhance the intuition
and sensitivity of peoples energy fields. Zeb has worked with very different
groups of people on the topic of personal space, varying from a focus on
self protection to a more healing and energetic way, such as Shiatsu. It has
been found to be a very powerful concept and tool for people to have,
especially those who work with other people. Pilates instruction involves much
hands on work and guidance, so it can be useful to increase and deepen the
energetic connection between the instructor and client, by using personal space
as a way to establish mutual trust and respect. The more open, responsive,
trusting and depth of connection, the greater the opportunity for positive
change to happen in a client.

5.1
Can Pilates really help balance
and proprioception disturbances caused by back pain?
Alan Zammit MSc, MCSP, MMACP, SRP
Repeat of Saturdays lecture (2.1)
Christin
Kuhnert
This workshop will focus on natural alignment of the
skeleton as a template for the efficient posture, discussing briefly the
factors, which often put that efficiency at risk. We will explore the stages
through which children pass in order to stand up and discuss how effective these
developmental movements area as a technique for correcting common postural
faults, for improving, flexibility, strength and balance, and encouraging
relaxation
We are pleased
to welcome Clemence. After being injured as a professional ballet dancer, she
became fascinated with the twin problems of flexibility and safe movement. She
studied Alexander technique, anatomy, physiology, developmental movement and
massage, and has since run courses and workshops on postural exercise, back
care, Childs Play (for parents and carers), exercises for the elderly,
applied anatomy for dancers, as well as anatomy, physiology and massage for
ITEC. Clemence lectures at Morley College, London.

Matwork course is constantly being revised to ensure that it remains fully up
to date with regard to the latest research findings and teaching techniques. In
this presentation, Miranda and Lynne will summarise the key changes, and
explain the background and their impact on working with clients.
A very important update for all Body Control
Pilates teachers!
