The Story behind
the Michael Miller Pilates Mat Poster
In April of 1998, while on tour, I came across a historical 8 page bulletin
titled "Bulletin One".
This was printed by The American Foundation for Physical Fitness in 1957, when
Joe was 77, active in his career, and 10 years before his death.
On the cover of "Bulletin
One" are little pictures of Joe (at the age of 60), in various mat
poses laid out in lines and columns. Upon inspection, each four pictures on
a line represent a mat exercise. It was this bulletin cover that served as a
guide to the mat images I put on the web as the Michael
Miller Pilates Mat in August of 1999. (Authentic, true to tradition.) Before
the images were completed life intervened, twice actually, for Sandra--the artist
in the mat images--in the birth of her two daughters.
Three years later, the missing images were captured, and the poster was completed.
This poster is authentic to Joe's bulletin cover, his same exercises in his
same order. A few additions have been made consistent with the current mat that
I teach in class, consistent with the "Pilates is an idea" that I
profess. (Footwork--before 100s, Tree--before Leg Circles, Twist One & Twist
Two--after Mermaid/Sidebend and before Boomerang)
